A performance solution is a project-specific way of demonstrating compliance with the National Construction Code’s Performance Requirements. It can support a design that uses an approach different from the prescriptive Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions, where permitted.
The value is a documented basis for assessing the proposal: what must be achieved, what evidence supports it and what conditions apply. Discuss it while the design is being developed, so the required work can be planned into your project.
Suitability depends on the issue and available evidence. A report does not guarantee acceptance or replace other required approvals.
HOW IPERMIT CAN HELP
The right service for your project.
01 / CONSULTANCY
Have a report prepared.
We prepare performance-solution reports within our Class 1 and 10 scope for projects assessed by another independent building surveyor or certifier.
Send the design information, the issue to be addressed and your appointed surveyor or certifier’s details. We confirm scope, technical inputs, fees and deliverables before engagement.
02 / STATUTORY ASSESSMENT
Submit a report for assessment.
Where iPermit is appointed to assess the building application, we assess relevant performance-solution documentation prepared independently by others, within our professional competence.
Provide the brief, final report, supporting evidence and matching plans. We communicate any further information needed as part of the application assessment.
THE PROCESS
From the brief to the report.
An overview of report development. Our role at each stage depends on the engagement; statutory assessment remains separate.
01
BRIEF
Define the brief
Identify the issue, relevant requirements, assessment methods and acceptance criteria. Prepare the performance-based design brief (PBDB) with the relevant stakeholders.
02
ANALYSIS
Develop the evidence
Undertake the analysis described in the brief. The evidence may include calculations, testing, technical documentation or specialist input, as appropriate.
03
EVALUATION
Evaluate the outcome
Compare the results with the agreed criteria. Revisit the proposal or brief if the evidence does not support the intended outcome.
04
REPORT
Document and submit
Prepare the final report, including the outcome, conditions and limitations. Submit it with the matching design documents to the appointed surveyor or certifier for assessment.
The process can loop back. If the evidence does not support the intended outcome, revisit the proposal or brief before the report is finalised. Statutory assessment remains separate.

What should you send us?
Send the information you have, and identify anything still being prepared. Use the property address in your email subject.
01
The project and the service you need
Property address, state, building use or class, contact details and whether you need report preparation or assessment of an existing report.
02
The issue to be addressed
A short explanation of the proposed approach, relevant drawings and any request for information identifying the compliance issue.
03
The current supporting information
Latest plans, product data, specifications, engineering and other available evidence. For assessment, include the PBDB, final report and supporting attachments.
04
Appointments, approvals and timing
Owner, developer, designer and appointed surveyor or certifier details; existing approvals and project references; intended timing and estimated cost of works for a project quote.
Can you prepare and assess the same performance solution?
No. If we prepare the solution as a consultant, its statutory assessment is undertaken by another independent firm. If we are the appointed surveyor or certifier, the solution must be independently prepared. We also check wider conflicts before accepting an engagement.
Does a performance solution automatically mean less building work?
No. The proposed approach needs evidence, and it may introduce construction, inspection or maintenance conditions. We discuss scope and information requirements so you can consider the proposed service before proceeding.
What if the proposal is outside Class 1 or 10?
Tell us the building class and technical issue. The consultancy report-preparation service described here is for Class 1 and 10 work. Our wider certification services cover other building classes, with scope and any specialist assessment needs confirmed for the project.
Can I enquire before the plans are complete?
Yes. Send the available information and identify which drawings are preliminary. Tell us about any existing appointment or request for information so we can direct the enquiry appropriately.
EXTERNAL WALL WEATHERPROOFING
Prepare your risk assessment.
Where an H2V1 weatherproofing assessment is relevant to your project, use our calculator to record the Table H2V1a risk factors for NCC 2022 or NCC 2025. Download the PDF to include with your supporting documents.
A risk score is one part of the assessment. It does not establish compliance or issue an approval.
