VICTORIA / APPLICATION GUIDE

Your Victorian application.
Each step, explained.

Appoint your building surveyor, prepare the right Form 1 and bring the supporting documents together. Our guide takes you from the first conversation to the completion stage.

THE PROCESS AT A GLANCE

The right appointment.
A well-prepared application.

For Victorian building permit applications. Applications are made through your building surveyor. Your planning permit, if required, is a separate council process.

  1. START WITH THE PROJECT

Discuss the work and check planning requirements.

Share the project address, proposed work, plans and any council correspondence. We discuss our service and quote. Check with council whether a planning permit is needed; where required, it must be obtained before the building permit can be issued.

  2. YOUR ENGAGEMENT

    Arrange the building surveyor appointment.

Complete the Appointment of Building Surveyor Form, including owner details, consent and signatures. The owner, or an appropriately authorised agent, appoints the private building surveyor. For domestic building work under a domestic building contract, the builder cannot make that appointment for the owner.

If a surveyor is already appointed, tell us before submitting a new application.

  3. YOUR APPLICATION PACK

Complete the right Form 1 and document checklist.

Use the Builder Application version of Form 1 for a project carried out by a builder, or the Owner-Builder Application version if you intend to undertake the work as an owner-builder. Complete the applicable sections and sign as the applicant.

Use the domestic or commercial checklist to gather title information, current drawings, engineering, specifications and relevant council information, approvals, reports and insurance. Include owner-builder consent where required. Ask us if you are unsure which form applies.

  4. SUBMIT TO OUR TEAM

Send your application pack to iPermit.

Send the completed appointment form, appropriate Form 1 and supporting documents to admin@ipermitba.com.au. Use the property address in the subject and include your quote or project reference if you have one. Ask us about sharing large drawing sets.

We review the information and advise of anything further needed for assessment. An initial enquiry does not itself appoint a surveyor or constitute a building permit application.

  5. BEFORE CONSTRUCTION

Complete assessment and receive the building permit.

Respond to requests for information and arrange the applicable fees and levy payment. The building surveyor must have the necessary approvals and information before a permit can be issued.

Before starting, read the issued permit, approved documents, conditions and required inspection stages. Do not begin work requiring a permit until it has been issued.

  6. THROUGH TO COMPLETION

Arrange inspections and the completion document.

Book the mandatory inspections shown on the permit and supply the required completion evidence. Your building permit identifies whether the final document is an Occupancy Permit or a Certificate of Final Inspection.

Use Form 15 when applying for an Occupancy Permit. Where an Occupancy Permit is required, it must be issued before occupation. The building surveyor assesses the applicable requirements before issuing the completion document.

One place to organise the paperwork.

Prepare my checklist

This guide covers the usual preparation sequence for a new building permit application. Additional consents, protection work, planning conditions or specialist reports may be needed. Contact us about amendments, extensions, existing work or an existing surveyor appointment.
