Follow the Victorian application guide

01

Start with the proposed work.

Many building projects in Victoria require a building permit before work starts. Whether a permit is required depends on the proposed work and applicable exemptions. Planning permission is a separate consideration.

Tell us what you are planning and where. We will discuss the building surveying service relevant to the project and the documentation needed for an assessment.

02

Prepare a coordinated application.

The assessment draws on the plans, specifications and supporting information for the project. We identify further information needed and communicate the requirements so your project team can respond.

  • Architectural plans and specifications
  • Relevant engineering and technical reports
  • Property and ownership information
  • Planning approval and endorsed plans, where required
  • Other supporting information relevant to the work

03

Understand the permit conditions and inspection stages.

The building permit sets out the approved work, conditions and mandatory inspection stages. It also identifies whether an Occupancy Permit or Certificate of Final Inspection is required on completion.

Keep the approved documents available, arrange inspections at the required stages and discuss changes before proceeding with work that differs from the permit. Addressing these steps throughout construction helps keep the completion process organised.

04

One team, across our Victorian service areas.

We support projects in Wodonga, Wangaratta, North East Victoria, the Alpine region and Greater Geelong. Our team combines professional assessment with coordinated administrative support, from the initial enquiry to the required completion documentation.

Your questions, answered.

Does a planning permit mean I can start building?

Not necessarily. Planning approval and building approval are separate. You must establish whether a building permit and other pre-construction requirements apply before work begins.

Will my project need an Occupancy Permit?

The building permit will state whether an Occupancy Permit or Certificate of Final Inspection is required. The requirement depends on the work and applicable provisions.
